What is Editorial Design?
Video notes:
In the video, it mentions the editorial design basics and from the start, it mentions the grid system. Having a grid system is an important step because it's what holds what is going to be seen which holds everything together. It keeps the consistency of the other elements used especially if creating a brochure you need to make sure that the person who sees it needs to be able to figure out the hierarchy because inconsistent because it can look confusing instead of easy to look at. If you want the reader to have a pause then you can a photo that covers the two pages to let the reader process what the reading is about. Another way that you can make your design more appealing and eye-catching is making a full bleed photo which contains or two pages covered by an image, this can be very useful because it can give the reader time to visualize the image and contain information. Based on the video it can be seen that it is all based on how to make the reading or magazine more interesting, neat, and well done. Many different types of things could be included
Article #1 This Is Me, Full Stop by Here Design
This article caught my attention because it's very self-explanatory and on each page, there is a side where there is text added and on the other side an image can be seen. This is an important aspect of the editorial design because it helps the reader understand what the article/ book is about. There is a lot of punctuation throughout the article and the cover makes it eye-catching, especially with the bright color that was added. There can also be seen a pattern in the book such as the color black and white which makes the book more visually appealing. The main goal in the creation of the book was to use a lot of space such as the words and images since the pages are mostly blank. Another goal that they were striking for was the difference between matte and gloss, which looks achievable. There is also a formal structure that isn't broken throughout the entire book. This book is very helpful and its summary is useful for understanding why those aspects are important to be added whenever working on an editorial design, many things can change the way an article/book is seen. I can now look back at this and rely on the information given whenever I need to use it in my editorial design.
article # 2 Circular 19 by Pentagram
This magazine was created to demonstrate typography combined together and they wanted the audience to see the enthusiasm they also made sure to inform the readers that the images weren't intended for information. Each page was very different from the one seen before because they didn't only want to include a pattern such as making it boring but they wanted to include different ways to show editorial design. The message behind the magazine is to not keep yourself or the reader bored but to try new things keep yourself busy on learning new things don't stay focused on one design or pattern like said before. As mentioned in the beginning this is a magazine and in general, each page looks different filled with different types of information, fonts, and colors. As for me, I think this magazine was very informative about how to keep our editing skills getting better and to not stick to one look because when used often it can get boring and not as eye-catching. The magazine itself looks very interesting as well there were many fonts used throughout the pages itself the images didn't really match but it was appealing. I can also include this in any future editorial designs.
article # Mr B & Friends
Based on the author his designs tend to have a clean more structured look, such as in with punchy colors and a high-quality finish, including a gloss black and white foiling on the cover that adds subtlety and impact. Their goal is to keep the reader entertained and not doze off to the next page, the intention is for the reader to take their time and visualize what's added in the magazines or books. They do that by merging words, graphics, and images. Another thing he recommends is to be "playful" with the highlights, illustrations, icons, and imagery. Also, be aware of the type of font that is being used because sometimes it doesn't look as great when it is printed out. The shades and colors are very important as well, basically the most important because magazines/books all are based on different colors. Be sure to add attention to the main message in the article or whatever the design is for, for the reader to not get confused. Another piece of advice given is that every page should have a main piece or be as included as the other pages to go with the journey of viewing the editorial design.
A website where I can see some editorial design is https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/home throughout the clothing website there can be their main clothing during this time, such as in inserting images and moving videos which shows their clothing better. This is helpful because the person who's shopping can find something appealing which makes them buy more clothing from there. It's well structured at the top it shows the options for viewing their website. Such as in the brand the typography is very eye-catching since its on the top left corner.
